The first joint experiments were carried out at PETRA III Beamline P07 from 2020 to 2023. The High Energy Materials Science Beamline P07 is jointly operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron and offers a photon energy range of 40 – 150 keV for various techniques and applications. The experimental hut EH4, in which investigations have been carried out in the past, is shown below.
Once our equipment has arrived in Hamburg, the next step is to install the experimental hut with the experimental setup and put the system into operation to investigate the laser process. This involves laying several hundred meters of cable and setting up the laser and monitoring systems to save space.
Once the hardware has been set up, the automation of the system is tackled. Although the high-energy synchrotron radiation makes it possible to visualize the processes, high safety requirements are coupled to the setup and implementation. The system is therefore semi-automated and monitored by camera systems in order to enable efficient process execution despite the high safety precautions.
By using a server rack set up for the experiments and networked systems within the test ecosystem, highly automated test execution is also possible for more complex issues that place high demands on precision.
