Laser Meets Synchrotron

Welcome to the Laser Meets Synchrotron website! We make the invisible visible!

But what does the name Laser Meets Synchrotron mean? The aim of the joint collaboration is to use synchrotron radiation as a tool to build up a detailed basic understanding of laser manufacturing processes. X-rays are to be used to visualize the process in the material in-situ by means of phase-contrast imaging and thus to better understand the process dynamics. See for yourself!

The images show an excerpt of previous experiments at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, which were carried out in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, the Chair for Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge (IFSW) der Universität Stuttgart, the Institute of Photonic Technologies LPT and the Technische Universität Ilmenau, Production Technology Group. We were supported by employees of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in carrying out the experiments at PETRA III Beamline P07. The images show the diverse possibilities offered by synchrotron radiation to illuminate our own laser processes.

Now the experiments at DESY are entering a new round on beamline P61. Together with the previous partner institutes and the new project partner, the Technischen Universität Wien, the experiments will be continued in 2024 and 2025. This time with the aim of increasing the temporal resolution of the processes to several 100 kHz and thus being able to visualize and describe the characteristic process phenomena in even greater detail.

Now back to the question: Why Laser Meets Synchrotron?

The slogan Laser Meets Synchrotron describes the alliance of six research institutes and their joint collaboration in which synchrotron radiation is used to examine laser processes in greater detail. As leading laser research institutes in Germany and Austria, synergies are to be exploited and added value created for research and industry through joint experience in the individual specialist areas.
